The Swans’ presence in football’s top flight is important not just for Swansea but for Wales as a whole. When people think of the impact of having a Welsh team in the Premier League, the first instinct is to look simply at the people it brings to the area and the direct income for those involved in the hospitality trade. This week a report shows that Swansea City AFC brings in a hefty upswing for the local economy. This is hugely important, but the Swans presence brings so much more than that and it can be valuable for any business. When they first achieved premier league status, we have spoke to a number of businesses who didn’t think that it would have any impact for them. That because they weren’t operating in the hospitality sector that it wasn’t relevant. As well as awareness, it also helps with positive sentiment. Having a team in the Premier League helps us to feel good about the area, provided they are doing ok that is! This complements the other good news which is around, about developments, about awards won by local companies and events taking place. And you don’t have to look far to find lots of good news as there are always things happening which we can be proud of and positive about. It can also make it easier to attract attention for exciting changes that are happening or plans that are being brought forward, simply because the name has resonance. And once you have that first attention or interest, it gives you something to build on, it’s down to you, so whether you’re an avid football fan or not, it makes good business sense to make sure you know what the Swans are up because that could just be the bit of information which enables you to connect and develop a business opportunity or secure that funding. Networking, when done well, can pay huge dividends! But far too often you see people at events who have not come prepared or who haven’t understood either the opportunity or what their role should be.
